PUJ facts based on experience

In my last post, I have enumerated a few facts that I know of/have experienced when riding the MRT. Now, it's the PUJs turn on the spotlight. PUJs, commonly known as jeepneys (Public Utility Jeepneys), is the main mode of transportation of the Filipinos, may it be in the provinces or in the city. It suits the lifestyle of the common masses because of the cheap fare which can bring them to places. But just like the MRT, there are several not-so-good stuff that I can share about the jeepneys. Here are some of them that I can think of...for now:

1. Expandable. Just like the MRT, PUJs redefine the definition of space. The barkers, and the drivers alike, will tell the passengers that there is enough room for one more even if all that could fit there is a fraction of the passenger's butt. They could have fitted 7 persons on each side for example, but when there are "healthy" passengers that occupies more than what they pay for (no offense meant), the drivers/barkers still insist on putting 7 people on that side. Some of their most common lines are:
"Usog-usog na lang po tayo sa kanan/kaliwa, para makaalis na kayo. Di to aalis hanggang di puno." "Upong 7.50 lang ho tayo jan oh." "Dyan ho sa kanan/kaliwa, pituhan ho yan, anim pa lang kayo."

2. Waiting Sheds with Wheels ala Pimp my Ride. Most PUJ drivers spend more than a minute or two at one location waiting for passengers, especially in places where there is a large volume of people. They don't even bother if their passengers are in a hurry. To hell with "it's my job, I have to get passengers". I've already posted about this before, it really got into my nerves that time.

3. God Knows Hudas Not Pay. You often see this hanging inside the PUJs whose goal is to touch the conscience of passengers that doesn't pay (commonly known as 1..2..3). BUT, there are several drivers who doesn't even give the change back unless you tell them so a number of times. This happens mostly on small changes. But still.

4. Smoke Belchers, Inside and Out. We are already used to smoke belching PUJs. What irritates me are drivers who smoke while driving. Not all passengers smoke, and I'm one of them. So, it gets annoying inhaling second-hand smoke on a public vehicle. If I'm not mistaken, there's already a law that prohibits smoking in a public vehicle.

5. ala MRT, stops at all stations. I hate this most of all. The drivers stop at all the people they see standing at the roadside, wait for a couple of seconds hoping that these people will change their mind and ride their jeepney. They even stop at guys peeing on the wall. Demet.

it's amazing that after all these years, the jeepney hasn't changed a bit. actually, they have even deteriorated. truly, the PUJ is a fine example of our culture and our country. we refuse to change for the better, simply because we are still blinded by past glory
